Play with the Rules: A Traveling Exhibition
January 17 - February 29, 2020
Oct 31, 5-11 PM
The Priscilla Fowler Gallery is proud to host Portmanteau: Play with the Rules, a traveling exhibition showcasing works by architects prompted to design around the scale of the familiar suitcase object. Portmanteau, the classic unfolding traveling bag, lies central to the compact scale of these artworks, but their scope expands around themes like travel, surveillance, identity and architectural practice. These thirteen artworks created by 21 artists tackle a diverse group of topics: Design As Play! challenges us to work together in creating communities that can withstand climate change; Piiiiissssst asks us how different we really art from the things we carry; and All Covered With… offers a model of collaboration to facilitate dialogue in the design process. Along with the curated works, students from the UNLV School of Architecture have created unique works carved in glycerine–site models that investigate the tactile pliability of bar soap and explore its translucent qualities. Just as multiple meanings are packed into the same word, the compositions here blend the functional utility of material luggage with new interpretations.
Curated by Jasmine Benyamin, Nikole Bouchard, Whitney Moon, Kyle Reynolds, and Mo Zell at the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA). Organized by Asst. Professor of Architecture at UNLV Alberto de Salvatierra, and the Priscilla Fowler Fine Art Gallery.
